The Island of Compass Cay
Compass Cay lies at the southern end of the Exuma Land and Sea Park boundary, and is a spectacular destination for relaxing in a natural and pristine environment. The island is situated in the central chain of the Bahamas and is privately owned, but is open to visitors who wish to share in the beauty this Bahama Island has to offer.
The island is accessible by boat, or by air. Many yachts make Compass Cay a destination while cruising through the beautiful Exuma Cay. The captains and owners enjoy the quiet relaxing atmosphere of the Marina, as well as the protection it offers. The Compass Cay Marina is probably most noted for the friendly Nurse Sharks, that lie beneath the marina docks. These docile creatures are fed daily, and visitors can snorkel with them. The sharks usually stay asleep on the sandy bottom after feeding, making it a comfortable experience for all who are curious and want to swim with the sharks. In addition to Nurse Sharks, snorkelers will delight with the multitude of tropical fish below the dock including French Angelfish, Snapper, Puffer Fish, and more.
If you are not arriving by boat, Compass Cay is accessible via flights from Fort Lauderdale or through Nassau. The easiest route is to fly into Staniel Cay, and take a short ferry ride up to Compass Cay. The ride is approximately 12 miles long, and you will see some spectacular scenery including deserted beaches, smaller cays, and perhaps some large yachts anchored in the protected anchorages along the way.
If you take a short walk to the other side of the island away from the Marina, you will find a long, crescent beach that opens to the ocean, and has the clearest of turquoise water imaginable. The white, sandy beach seems to stretch on forever. At the northern end of the beach, you will find jagged rocks that have been weathered by the seas, and you will have the chance to see new blowholes forming.
Another popular site on the island is Rachel’s Bubble Bath. This natural lagoon is located a short hike in from the tip of the island. There is a small break in the rock formation that faces the ocean side, causing the seawater to spill into a shallow lagoon, and bubbles with foam when the waves break, thus the name. It is truly a spectacular sight to see.
If you are interested in vacationing on a private, out of the way island, Compass Cay has several cottages available for rent. All of the cottages have spectacular views, and many times, you may be the only renters on the island at any given time. It is a place for relaxation, adventure, and provides the best in outdoor experiences.
Anyone who enjoys sport fishing will enjoy fishing with a local guide from Compass Cay. The 6000 foot depths to the east of the island has world class sportfishing. Dolphin, Marlin, and Yahoo frequent the waters just off of the island, and are usually offered as the catch of the day during dinner time.
